Updates and rollback
You can update your server's game version and its mods from the dashboard. Every update takes a restore point first, so you can always go back to how the server was before.
Where Updates Appear
Overview, Server software card. Shows the version your server runs. When a newer release exists, it shows "X available" with Update. You can also press Check now, View the release, or Dismiss the notice.
Mods tab. Each mod with a newer version shows an Update available badge with the new version. Press Update all to update every mod that has a newer version in one plan, or Update on a single mod. Last checked shows when the mod list was last compared, and Check for updates runs the check again.
Update checks run automatically once a day.
What an Update Does
An update runs these steps in order:
- Take a restore point of your files, mod list and startup variables
- Stop the server
- Apply the changes
- Start the server
- Check it stays up for a while after it starts
The server restarts once during the update.
If the server does not start cleanly within 10 minutes, or it crashes, goes offline, or reports a fatal error shortly after starting, it goes back to the restore point automatically. The server comes back on the previous version. This only happens when Go back automatically if it fails is on.
The Update Dialog
Press Update on a server or mod to open the dialog. It shows:
- Title, with the item and the version it moves to
- What changes, listing each item with its current and new version
- The restore point note, which says a restore point is created first and what happens if the update fails
- Go back automatically if it fails, on by default and recommended
Turn the toggle off if you want to review a failed update yourself. With it off, a failed update stays as it is, and you can go back from Backups.
Press Update to start. The dialog closes and the progress drawer opens.
Following Progress
The Update progress drawer shows when the update started, its steps, and its current state:
- Queued, Taking a restore point, Applying, Starting, Checking, Completed
- Failed, Rolling back, Rolled back
Each step shows whether it is waiting, running, or finished. If the update is rolled back, the steps Rolling back to the restore point and Rolled back to the restore point appear. If the rollback itself cannot finish, the step shows Rollback failed, and you should contact support.
You can close the drawer while the update runs. It keeps going, and you get a notification when it is done.
When an update fails, the drawer explains why in plain words. For example, it may say that the restore point could not be taken, so nothing was changed, or that the server crashed shortly after starting.
After a finished update, the drawer can show a Go back button if the update can still be undone.
Restore Points
Restore points are listed in the Restore points card on the Backups tab.
- A restore point is taken before each update.
- Each restore point is kept for 7 days. The card shows how long is left, and Expired once the time is up.
To go back, press Go back on a restore point. A confirmation shows what it puts back:
- Files and worlds
- Mod list and versions
- Startup variables
Files added or changed after the restore point are lost on Go back, including world progress.
Going back needs permission to change server settings.
Before a big version jump, also create a manual backup from the Backups tab. Restore points expire after 7 days.
Update Notifications
Once a week, team members who can change a server's settings receive a digest notification for each server that has an outdated mod or a newer server version. It is sent only when the latest check that week found something to update.
Permissions
- Seeing available updates and restore points requires access to the server's backups.
- Starting an update, and going back to a restore point, requires permission to change server settings. This is the Admin level. See permission levels.
Troubleshooting
A mod has no version for my server. A mod with no release for your server's version is left out of the update, and the rest still update. That mod stays on its current version. Check the mod's page on Modrinth later for a newer release.
The update failed and was rolled back. The server is back on the previous version, and the restore point stays in Backups for 7 days. Check the console for errors, for example a mod that conflicts with the new version. Fix the cause before you try the update again.
The update failed and was not rolled back. This happens when Go back automatically if it fails was off. The server stays as the update left it. Go back from the Restore points card, or fix the problem and try again.
The update will not start. If another update is already running, or the server is busy with another action, wait for it to finish and try again.
