Notifications
Plex Host can tell you about things that happen to your servers and account without you having to watch the dashboard: a server crashing, a backup failing, a payment failing, an invitation to a team, and more. Notifications arrive through up to three channels — in-app, email, and SMS — and you control which channel each kind of event uses.
The bell
Every page has a bell icon in the top bar. It shows a badge with your unread count and opens a popover with your most recent notifications. Click one to jump straight to what it's about (a server, a backup, your billing page) — it's marked read automatically. Mark all read clears the badge without leaving the popover.
Click View all (or go to Notifications from the bell) to open your full inbox, which loads more as you scroll and lets you tell read from unread at a glance.
Preferences
Go to Account → Notifications to control which events reach you and how:
- Each event (server crashed, backup failed, payment failed, team invitation, etc.) has its own row.
- Each row has a switch per channel: in-app, email, SMS.
- Turning a channel off for an event stops that specific combination — you can, for example, keep in-app alerts for backup completion but skip the email.
A small number of account security notifications — password changes, new sign-ins, session sign-outs — are always sent by email and can't be turned off. They're shown locked in the preferences list.
SMS and phone numbers
SMS is reserved for the most urgent events (payment failures, server crashes, node outages) and only sends once you've added and verified a phone number:
- Enter your number on the Notifications page.
- You'll receive a one-time code by text — enter it to verify.
- Once verified, SMS switches become available for the events that support it.
Removing your phone number turns off every SMS channel immediately.
SMS delivery depends on the platform having a messaging provider configured. If it isn't available in your region or on this deployment, the SMS switches stay off and events fall back to your other enabled channels.
Sending yourself a test
Each channel has a Send test action so you can confirm delivery — for email, check your inbox (and spam folder); for SMS, check your phone. Test sends are rate-limited to a few per hour.
Email delivery
Notification emails include a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom, scoped to the category of that email (for example, unsubscribing from a backup email turns off email for every server-related event, not your whole account). You can always re-enable a category from the Notifications preferences page.
